Fucking signal boost this shit

This is one of the most horrific things happening in the world and yet I can’t seem to find out any news about it.

Ambulances are being shot by tanks. Doctors, civilians, children playing on the beach and everyone else are all being killed.

THAT IS SUCH A SMART JOKE, WHAT THE HELL

I 100% had to Google this joke and I have 300% more respect for Rugrats.

i don’t get it, can someone explain? [i searched their names and still don’t get it]

Mapplethorpe’s photography was usually very evocative and often contained nude subjects. She having people over who are “very conservative” so she is telling someone (I forget who on the show) to put a Norman Rockwell painting because his work is pretty conventionally accepted as important in american history. The people in his paintings were usually white Americans, often working class, and sometimes soldiers. His work was about pulling the country together, patriotism, american exceptionalism, etc. So more appropriate for a conservative visitor than a picture of a naked guy.

Dude.

Okay, but kids, Mapplethorpe didn’t just do nudes, a good body of his work that was showcased shortly before his death (particularly that which would have been fresh in the minds on the American public around the original run of Rugrats) specifically featured homoerotic and sadomasochistic themes.
So she’s not just saying, “Take down the pics of the nude guy” she’s saying, “Take down the image of the man with the bullwhip in his ass.”

PRAISE BE

When I worked at a fast food restaurant, I did a social experiment.
One day, I asked “do you want a girl toy or a boy toy?” No one went against gender roles.
The next day, it was “do you want a doll toy or a car toy?” Boys got dolls. Girls got cars.
Vocabulary is important.

I think Hiccup and Astrid are the best animated couple ever.

I love how their relationship isn’t a major plot point for the films. Astrid isn’t there as a reward for the hero, she is also his best friend (next to Toothless of course). She didn’t stop being a warrior after she became a love interest (and Hiccup wouldn’t want her to, he loves her for it).

They talk about their problems. They fight their enemies together. And they trust each other.

Something that I’m just noticing from these gifs. They actually lean their cheeks into the kisses, opposed to just letting the other do all the work.  That’s something actual couples do when they know each other well enough to know it’s coming.  I love this.

the way Hiccup leans tho

"okay, here it comes, I can feel, just move a bit, keep it business-like…aw yiiiis, but dont show it, you’re supposed to be mad"

I disagree with the whole ‘as a reward for the hero’ because in the first movie she was literally a prize for the hero…. she basically paid him no mind until he showed her the world on his dragon… it’s the same ‘impress the girl and she suddenly likes him’ so I’m on the fence about THAT aspect of the movies, but in httyd 2 I REALLY liked how they handled their relationship. (and everyone else’s relationships as well)

But she did pay him mind. In the beginning, when Snotlout and most of the village are mocking him, she looks on with sympathy.

That’s not the look of someone paying him no mind, she’s not laughing or showing disinterest she feels genuinely bad for him. What Astrid really isn’t interested in is coddling him, she feels bad but she isn’t there to go awww poor baby he tries so hard, keep working and you’ll be fine. She expects him to hold his own when he first arrives at the arena. She has her own interests and they relate to protecting Berk, that’s why she gets mad at him during training. 'Is this a joke to you?' Astrid is very aware that they are at war and people are dying because of the dragons, and Hiccup stands around making jokes during their training. Yes we all love his sass, but how cute would a class clown be to someone who thinks of the mission like that? It’s not a case of her ignoring him until he impresses her, that’s the opposite of what happens. She shows sympathy when he tries and fails, and gets mad when he jokes and does nothing, when he runs off through dinner after hearing that a downed dragon is a dead dragon she follows after him for a moment because she does pay attention to him. Attention she pays before he ever starts learning from Toothless!

Granted it’s not all positive attention, a lot of it is very vitriolic and Astrid does get jealous when he starts improving and showing her up, she knows something weird is going on and wants to get to the bottom of it. Her interest isn’t one of compassion or romance until he makes her understand dragon riding, yes, but to say she doesn’t do anything other than act as a prize is doing her a huge disservice. That’s not a moment of ‘Hiccup is so cool so the girl swoons’, it’s a moment of her learning that there’s more than what she sees and that people’s eyes CAN be opened to the truth. Astrid has clear motivations and interests before she bonds with Hiccup, and after she does she tries to help him, encourage him and fight alongside him because it’s the right thing to do. She starts out noticing Hiccup, then she starts pushing him, then she’s jealous, then they come to understand each other. Astrid is a kind and understanding character when she wants to be, but at no point does she do anything she doesn’t believe in or have her own investments in. Her focus on Hiccup is even for her own interests at first, and then they’re working together to save the village. Hiccup doesn’t win the girl because she’s a generic love interest there to be won, Astrid gives him a chance and opens up to him on her own terms.
